Our History

Knuckeys Winchelsea, in south western Victoria was established in 1917 by Frederick Knuckey as a blacksmith shop servicing their local region. From day one, Knuckeys immersion in their local community, and having an integral knowledge of their clients’ needs, has been the key to the business’s ability to grow with the Australian agricultural industry over the past 100 years.

Frederick’s son Hugh took over the business in the late 1940’s and transformed the business from blacksmithing to electric arc welding meeting the demands of a growing rural industry, moving to farm machinery repairs, truck body building, bulk grain bins and the machinery supporting the local coalmine. Hugh also added a retail farming equipment offering to the region’s farmers when he established one of the first John Deere dealerships, as part of the business.

Following Hugh’s pre-mature death in 1965, sons Robert and John took on the business as 17 and 18-year olds! With the financial support of a group of local farmers and guidance from long term employee Lester Boddington, the 3rd generation Knuckey boys battled through some tough times in the 1960s until they found their feet with John developing the engineering side of the business and Rob the machinery sales. Hard work, persistence and the ongoing client support of the local farmers enabled the continued evolution of the business into manufacturing farm sheds, broiler and grain handling equipment.

The 1990s Hawke/Keating recession hit the rural industry hard and the Knuckeys needed all of their innovative thinking and agility to continue the businesses support of their local farming community.

John’s sons Warwick and Steve became involved in the business in 2013. As John & Robert implemented their succession plan, the 4th generation Knuckeys have built on the 100-year base of hard work, client collaboration and a passion for agriculture. Adding their technical qualifications, outside business knowledge and expertise, they are leading the business into its current standing as a rural equipment innovator on a national and international scale.
